Emily Roysdon, Modesto, California "In 1999, I was called to serve for jury duty in Stanislaus County, and ignoring my pleas that I was breastfeeding and staying home to care for my young son, I was bullied and thwarted until I finally gave in and reported for jury service. Despite all my efforts, I ended up in the jury box in preparation for a trial and it was some random whim of the defense attorney that dismissed me, 6 hours after I had left my son at home."
Linda Loya MacKay - Alpaugh, California "When my child was 9 months old, I was called in for jury duty, and when I requested to be excused I was told that mothers who were breastfeeding could only be excused for 6 months. At that time my child was still nursing frequently, and I felt that it would be very difficult for both my daughter and I if we were separated for a long period of time. After phone calls and letter writing (and a lot of stressing) I was given a 3-month reprieve, but since then it's been a constant concern and struggle to make people understand my position."
