Idaho - Sandy’s story

Sandy was called for jury duty in June 2005 by the Third Judicial District Court, Canyon County Idaho.  She is the sole caregiver of  her 2 small children, and is a stay-at-home, work-at-home mother.  She had no one to watch over her two children, and she refused to leave them at a day care or with someone that she did not fully know.

When Sandy contacted the Canyon County Courts, told them of her situation, and respectfully requested to be excused from jury, she was harshly told that caring for her kids was an unacceptable excuse.  Furthermore, she was instructed to put her children in day care so that she could perform her civic duty.

Sandy was not trying to “get out” of performing her civic duty…  She felt that her primary duty was to care for her young children.  It appears the Third Judicial District Court does not share Sandy’s conviction.  Instead, it seems that this court considers children inconveniences that need to be dealt with, rather than vulnerable citizens who need to be cared for.  Perhaps the Third Judicial District Court has forgotten that children are also citizens of this country, and as such, deserve to be protected under the Constitution.

Doesn’t our justice system exist to protect all of our citizens?
