Barb Stryker Barb Stryker was called for jury duty by the Jessamine County District Court in late November 2006 for a 4-month period, beginning January through April. Barbara is the mother of 7 children, including a 4 year old and a 11-month-old who she currently breastfeeds.
Barbara filled out & sent in her jury duty paper work, requesting a hardship exemption. She also attached a detailed letter explaining her situation as a breastfeeding mother and sole caregiver to her 7 children.
After nearly a month’s time, Barbara had not gotten a reply from the court whether she would be excused. She called the court and spoke to a clerk who told her that the judge probably hadn’t had time to review her request yet. Only the Judge could review Barbara’s request and allow her to be excused. She further explained that it would be very difficult to get excused from jury duty. Barb asked, “Aren’t breast feeding mothers excused from jury duty?” The Clerk replied, “Oh no honey, not usually.” |
